Colin Young's Music Studio

Hi and welcome to my studio policies page. Please find all the details about the studio below and read them carefully. If you have any questions please contact me.

Colin's Responsibilities

To develop all students into not only piano players but musicians. Students will cover a range of musical styles and structures. Using the piano, percussion instruments and technology, pupils will thoroughly enjoy their lessons. My aim is to leave students excited about learning and leave their lessons looking for more.

Student and Parent Responsibilities

Arrive at lessons in a timely manner and well prepared. In order to achieve goals it's important that positive reinforcement is used to encourage practice and develop technique. It is preferred that pupils practice on pianos however that's not always possible so weighted action and touch sensitive keyboards are acceptable. If you are looking for advice please don't hesitate to contact me.

Studio Calendar

In order to allow for holidays, exam time, Christmas/New Year, sickness and performing I offer 40 lessons per year. Lessons are given during the week and will continue through the school Summer holidays.

Payment and Where Your Money Goes

Tuition fees don't only cover the lesson time. There is a lot more that goes into the lessons outside of the allocated slot, including:

  • Time spent with the student
  • Time spent preparing for the specific student which includes preparing the best approach and plan for the students progress
  • My training and experience
  • Professional organization memberships and continuing education which helps me to make sure that you get the most current teaching practices
  • Studio expenses like instruments, copying, instrument tuning, repairs and software
  • Certification costs
  • Being available on email, text or messenger to help students between lessons where required
  • Login to the studio website that has a growing collection of music and videos to further aid learning.

Tuition fees are spread evenly across the year and charged a month in advance and are non refundable. This monthly payment guarantees the students place and covers all of the points mentioned above. It also allows you to budget and there won't be any last minute rummaging around for the fee or running to the bank.

The fee will cover the 40 lessons and is divided evenly across 12 months. This means that if there are 5 lessons or 2 lessons in a month the payment will still be the same. E.g. hourly private lessons are £35 then the yearly cost will be £1400 (40 x £35). The monthly charge will be £1400/12 making the payments £117 per month. Price is adjust accordingly based on the above price.

Students or parents will receive an invoice 1 week before the 1st of each month and payment is due for the first. Payment details are collected by Stripe and no details are stored by me.

Student Materials

Where a student requires a book, manuscript or sheet music I will buy them and add them to your next monthly bill unless you're happy to buy it yourself.

In my website I also have a collection of free music for students only. This is added to every month so the library will grow over time.

Missed Lessons

Missed lessons are non refundable. The 40 lessons are delivered within the school term. If there are a few lessons to catch up on we can do that through the Summer holidays.

Exams

If students wish to sit practical exams with ABRSM then I am happy to help. This is not mandatory. Taking on an exam takes considerable effort and dedication to get the best results. Once a student applies to sit an exam we will work on scales, aural and practical work. We will also run mock exams before the due date to help with preparation. Extra lessons may also be required.

Students should realise that the practical exams will have an effect on other activities before committing.

Termination of Lessons

Should a student wish to terminate their lessons then they must inform me by email. Their lessons will stop at the end of the payment cycle and there will not be any refunds.

Media Releases

As part of the business I take photos and record videos. Occasionally I will use them as promotional material or to help pupils by using them as examples. If you are not happy with this please let me know. I fully understand if this is the case.
